Spiritualism is an officially recognised religion with its own churches and educational centers. It has ordained ministers who enjoy the same rights and privileges as those of any other religion.
Spiritualism is a religion that incorporates the core beliefs of all major religions: life after death, immortality, and the existence of God. What sets Spiritualism apart is its ability to demonstrate, through mediumship, that humans survive physical death. Mediums can communicate with those who have passed away, providing conclusive evidence of the soul's continued existence.
Spiritualism is a universal religion with a primary focus on the Fifth Principle 'Personal Responsibility.' We are endowed with free will and the ability to discern right from wrong, making us solely responsible for our thoughts and actions. Additionally, we act as our own judge in the present moment, receiving compensation and retribution according to the Sixth Principle.
We do not automatically become spiritual upon leaving this world; instead, we retain our earthly characteristics. Opportunities for spiritual progress are available throughout eternity, as free will and personal responsibility continue to be relevant. Spiritualism is a progressive religion capable of overcoming materialistic influences
Mediums are ordinary individuals who have developed their natural ability to communicate with the spirit world through training. There are various types of mediumship, as those in the spirit world use different methods to communicate, helping us understand the truth of everlasting life.
Spiritualism includes healing for those in need, either through personal contact, known as “the laying on of hands,” or through absent healing, where patients receive healing through prayer. Healers may alleviate suffering, though they cannot guarantee a cure. Spiritual healing also provides assistance to the terminally ill, their families and friends, and offers support during times of bereavement. It is important to note that spiritual healing is not the same as faith healing; babies and pets, who cannot have faith, can still benefit from spiritual healing.
Spiritualist services come in various forms, including the Divine Service and the Healing Service. The Divine Service features hymns, prayers, and a guest speaker who delivers a short talk on Spiritualist philosophy. It also includes a demonstration of mediumship, where the medium communicates with the spirit world and shares messages with the congregation. Additionally, churches organize other events such as mediumship demonstrations, workshops, charity fundraisers, and social and family gatherings.
The Spiritualists’ National Union has an Education Scheme, available to everyone, and a Training and Awards Scheme for Individual Members of the SNU to gain certificates and diplomas of competence in various subjects. More detailed information is available from the SNU website.
